There is something special about old black-and-white photographs. They give us a window into the past, into simpler times and of those who are no longer with us, and remind us of the sacrifices those who came before us made in search of a better life.
My mother recently put together a family photo album, which in turn inspired me to write this blog. It's important to reflect on the past and at the same time be thankful for the present.
I've enjoyed discovering these photographs, many of which are new to me. Especially those of my grandparents and their childhood in Finland. As I look through them I find myself imagining how life must have been back then. Family played a vital role during this time, with relatives often stepping in to adopt cousins due to the effects of war. I've discovered this to be true in my own family tree, with one cousin being taken in after his father died in a war when he was only a baby. It shows that loved ones supported each other during difficult times, which is a great lesson we can all learn from.
Old photographs can teach us about the importance of connection, sacrifice, and the ability to endure through difficult circumstances. They give us a glimpse into the way the world used to be, helping us appreciate what we have today and honor the people that brought us here.
