From Ireland to Halifax (1922)<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Patrick always said the hardest part wasn't crossing the ocean, but stepping off the train just outside Halifax and realizing how quiet everything was compared to Cork.<\/p>\n

When the O'Connors came through Pier 21 in the autumn of 1922, they didn't have much to show for it. Just a heavy wooden trunk, three kids under ten, and a few letters from cousins saying the work further down the coast was brutal but honest. Ellen kept her mother's recipe notebook tucked right at the bottom of the trunk under the woolens, alongside a cast-iron skillet that took up half the weight.<\/p>\n

Those first years were lived out in drafts. The small house they rented had windows that rattled every time the wind came off the Atlantic, and Patrick spent his days hauling timber and working the docks until his hands stayed blistered from March through November. Ellen traded letters with home whenever the post came through, though half the time the ink was smudged from dampness. They stayed because going back wasn't an option, and slowly, the kitchen started smelling like home again when she finally tracked down enough decent flour to bake bread that didn't fall apart.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
