Growing up, a lot of relatives would come to visit from Ireland. On one visit, my dad's cousin brought over a CD by an artist named Christy Hennessy called A Year in the Life (1993), which had just come out. Christy Hennessy is remembered in Ireland as a famous folk singer and songwriter.

I have fond memories of Irish music being played in my house when I was growing up. Artists like The Fureys, The Chieftains, and Christy Hennessy were often playing in our house. I wanted to share some history about his career that I didn't even know until recently.

Christy Hennessy was born in Tralee, County Kerry, and when he was six years old, he had a homemade guitar made from an old tea chest. He had severe dyslexia and left school around the age of eleven without learning to read or write. Because he couldn't write down lyrics or music, he used a tape recorder to hum and sing his ideas, putting his songs together from memory.

His first album, Christy Hennessy, also known as The Green Album, came out in 1972 but received little attention at the time. He didn't release another album for twenty years. He spent those two decades working on construction sites to support his family, having pretty much given up on ever making it as a solo artist. Yet even while working on building sites, his songs were making other people famous. During that time, other artists were actually making hits out of the songs he was writing. Christy Moore had a hit with "Don't Forget Your Shovel," and Frances Black sang "All the Lies That You Told Me."

A record executive eventually convinced him to give the studio another shot. When he recorded The Rehearsal in 1992, it relaunched his career, achieving triple-platinum status in Ireland and even outselling U2 at its peak. After all those years of writing music, the Irish music scene recognized him, and he won the IRMA Best Newcomer award in 1992.

For me, Christy Hennessy has been one of the Irish artists who has provided a real connection to Ireland. I first heard his music through that CD my dad's cousin brought over when I was young, and learning more about his life has given me an even greater appreciation for the songs I've listened to for so long. I think his story is a reminder of just how much can come from never giving up on something you love.
