Lappeenranta Fortress

In the summer of 2023, I traveled to Finland for three weeks. During my trip, I had the opportunity to reconnect with one of my cousins, whom I hadn't seen in many years. Together, we explored various places, including historic churches, monuments, and small towns. As we traveled through these towns, we encountered beautiful landscapes, including forests, lakes, and rivers. Another notable aspect of small towns is that they offer pit stops featuring traditional wood-burning saunas.

I also visited larger cities, such as Lappeenranta, located in the southeastern part of Finland near the border with Russia. Lappeenranta is situated on the shores of Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland. Founded in 1649, the city has a military fortress built in the 18th century during Swedish rule and features a maze-like structure designed to protect the eastern borders against attacks from Russia. The structures were made of earth and grass, allowing them to blend in with the landscape, and over the centuries were held by both Sweden and Russia.

Here are some key points about Lappeenranta:

  • Museums: Lappeenranta has a variety of museums, such as the Lappeenranta Fortress Museum and the South Karelia Museum.
  • Events: The city hosts a variety of cultural events and festivals throughout the year that celebrate local art and traditions.
  • Recreation: Hiking, boating, and fishing on Lake Saimaa are popular activities in the surrounding area, as well as ice fishing and snowshoeing in the winter.
  • Sauna Culture: Lappeenranta is known for its sauna culture, with many public saunas available for visitors.
  • University: Lappeenranta is home to Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology.
  • Transportation: Lappeenranta is easy to reach by train and bus from other Finnish cities.

I found Lappeenranta to be a fascinating city to visit because of its cultural and military history. I highly recommend visiting, especially during the summer months of July and August, as there are a variety of festivals and cultural events, as I mentioned earlier.
